In Memory ofJoseph Grodin

30th August, 1930 - 6th April, 2025

Joseph Grodin was a union lawyer, law professor, arbitrator, mediator, founding member of the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board, and Justice of the California Court of Appeal and California Supreme Court.

His numerous publications and court opinions pressed an expansive view of legal rights, and especially those of working people. He was also a prominent commenter on the importance of state constitutions, state courts, and the independence of the judiciary.

Joe relentlessly pursued justice, from fighting for voting rights in the south in the early 60s to California's high court. He was deeply beloved by his family, friends, students, and colleagues, in whom he inspired a powerful commitment to civil rights and the rule of law.

His long career is a model to anyone hoping to build a gentler, fairer world.
